*Supply chain conference shows UK firms how to compete for estimated 57% share of project
*British and French nuclear manufacturers to share experience
*New arrangements being set up to bring practical and financial help for nuclear suppliers
Today, EDF Energy and its main delivery partners are gathering hundreds of suppliers to help them understand how to win contracts at the proposed Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.
The "Building our Industrial Future" conference in London is focusing on the opportunities for manufacturing firms to meet the stringent requirements needed in nuclear new build.
Hinkley Point C will be the first new nuclear power station built in Britain since 1995. It has the potential to rebuild the country’s industrial stamina and lead a renaissance in nuclear skills.
The conference follows the recent agreement in principle on commercial terms for the proposed power station. At that time EDF Energy confirmed the four most important suppliers for the project.
EDF Energy is now working hard to maximise the opportunities for UK business to win work on the project which represents a £16bn investment. EDF Energy studies show that 57% of construction costs can be spent in the UK. For example EDF Energy’s French partner AREVA has already signed a memorandum of understanding with 25 British companies for the supply of components and services.
Experience built on the project, and partnerships forged between British and French companies, will create high value jobs and enable UK businesses to compete around the world to support new nuclear projects already planned or underway.
British and French companies who are already in the new nuclear supply chain are showcasing their experience and expertise at the conference being held at the ExCel Centre.
Companies attending include:
• Clyde Union from Glasgow who have already supplied pumps to the EPR reactors under construction at Flamanville, France and Taishan in China, as well as supplying nuclear power stations in the UK.
• Darchem from Darlington and Stockton-on-Tees who also supplies specialist thermal insulation to the projects at Flamanville and Taishan, in addition to UK nuclear power stations.
• Doosan Babcock with sites in Gateshead and Glasgow whose nuclear expertise includes the manufacture of pressurised systems and pipework
EDF Energy’s Managing Director for New Nuclear Build, Humphrey Cadoux Hudson, said:

There are many UK companies already winning high-value global nuclear contracts – our aim is to help many more British businesses benefit from this huge opportunity. This conference will help them get ready to compete.
"Countries around the world are constructing new nuclear power stations to provide secure, affordable low carbon electricity. Experience gained through HPC will enable UK manufacturers to earn their share of this high-value global nuclear supply business."
EDF Energy is also working with the Somerset Chamber of Commerce, to help local firms secure a share of £500 million worth of contracts for the services needed to support the operation of the site. This work will be required during the planned nine years of construction and includes providing thousands of meals every day to on-site workers.
Helping local companies to work together to win contracts should create a legacy of a new business model for them that equips them to compete for similar contracts for other big projects in the future.
During construction there will be 5,600 workers on site at peak with an estimated 25,000 different people working on the project during construction. There will be 900 full-time jobs during the plant’s operating life. 1,200 businesses in Somerset have signed up to participate and 550 nationally.
EDF Energy is also enabling the growth of the UK’s nuclear capability by supporting nuclear research and development through partnerships at a number of UK universities of strategic importance. These are Imperial College London, Bristol, Strathclyde and Manchester universities.
